Photic sneeze reflects (PSR) or Autosomal dominant compelling Helio-ophthalmic outbursts (ACHOO) syndrome, yes that's the name of a condition described first by Aristotle in 350 BC. An Individual with the syndrome upon sudden exposure to the intense sunlight, which triggers nasal irritability and lead to uncontrollably long sneeze bursts.
Despite its hereditary nature, only a few scientific pieces of literature briefly mentioned the condition. The exact cause of PSR remains unknown. Continuous sneezing may result in rib fractures in osteoporotic individuals, spontaneous abortion, ruptured intracranial aneurysm, aortic dissection, and even death. As of now, there is no known treatment or management for ACHOO.
According to a study that included six patients with PSR, the application of firm digital pressure by patients' index finger to the skin of the upper lip region (sub-philtral region) – the technique is known as Philtral Pressure Technique (PPT) prevented the condition in three of them.
