Earlier studies on SARS-CoV-2 indicated that the virus persists on plastic, and stainless steel, which has triggered editors to make headlines and print advice on decontamination— doorknobs to groceries. And then, Goldman, a microbiologist at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, decided to bring the doubts about fomites transmission to rest. He pointed out through a commentary for The Lancet Infectious Diseases, questioning the idea that SARS-CoV-2 passes from one person to another through contaminated surfaces, that rarely occurs. But, as time passed, scientific views on the COVID-19 virus has changed. Findings from several studies suggest that most transmissions occur due to large droplets and aerosols coughed out of an infected individual. Even though surface transmission is possible, yet, not considered to be a significant risk. “Excessive attention on making surfaces pristine takes up limited time and resources that would be better spent on ventilation or the decontamination of the air that people breathe,” says the engineer Linsey Marr, working on airborne disease transmission.
