The history of “x” dates back to hundreds of years which according to the Oxford English Dictionary, the letter "x" had been used in 1763 to represent a kiss. How these symbols arrived or where they come from remains a mystery to date. Similarly, smiley face emoticon, :), are often used earlier to the arrival of the graphics-based emoticon, and professor Scott Fahlman has been given the credit for the invention. Even though there are no conclusive explanations of how a cross came to mean a kiss, yet it could be related somehow with the letter taw in early Hebrew or chi in Greek. Studies found several citations from 1880 onwards and the first mention of “x” representing kiss occurred in a letter in the year 1960. The old tradition of using the letter “x” to send kisses, has long gone. Yet, we can still find people today who prefer sticking with the old classic version and finds overuse of graphic emoticons to be creepy. xxxxxx!
