During summer, while having ice cream, you probably hardly think of suffering from a staggering pain in the forehead known as “brain freeze” or “Ice cream headache.” Taking a mouthful of a frozen treat too quickly may trigger the onset of such pain which in medical terminology known as sphenopalatine ganglion neuralgia.
The pain occurs in a response from the body to halt and warn you to take it easy on the speed of consumption. The exact mechanism for the cause remains unknown. However, a widely accepted theory is that the rapid contraction and expansion of blood vessels could be the reason for such headaches.
Since the regions around and the tongue itself are considered highly vascularized, therefore, we often take body temperature reading in this region. Drinking freezing beverages, or eating ice cream too fast, can lead to the rapid ramping down of the temperature in the back of the throat than the usual. Hence the onset of pain within seconds, but often vanishes quickly with no treatments. The only treatment that exists so far is to slow down the speed while consuming ice-cold eatables. Of many remedies, the use of drinking warm water has been practised by many people to restore the warmth of the tongue.
