The mystery behind the mass death of elephants and silencing the science

Elephant, Mass death

It has been more than a month, scientists tracking the mass death of elephants in Botswana, which they recently concluded to be the result of a neurotoxin in water holes.

The mystery of sudden death of over 300 elephants comes to an end with the finding. The large population of elephants in Botswana is home to the tourism industry, which accounts for $2 billion a year and perhaps that turned it into a political issue. According to experts, drought could be the reason behind the production of toxin by cyanobacteria. Draught, one of the outcomes that often connects with the detrimental traumas caused to the environment, is a spontaneous process. But when the employers mislead the public on the environmental consequences of activities as mining, the impacts of such practices can be worst.

According to a survey from 2013, over 4,000 Canadian government scientists found 24% of layered information for representing it to the media. Issues such as the impacts of mining or land clearing on environment fall under the controversial tag and hardly reach the decision-makers. Half of the participants in the survey reported being harassed and criticized for speaking out. However, a new platform called The Ecological Society of Australia has come, where researchers can report on science suppression. The platform provides the flexibility of speaking out about such incidences, but the question remains with the authenticity of such incognito reporting.
