Jallikattu — Cultural Heritage or Animal Cruelty?

Jallikattu

Conflicts and protests against cultural and animal rights continued in India after the Supreme Court judgment on banning Jallikattu came in 2014. However, the same was claimed by the Tamil Nadu Government under Article 29(1) of the Constitution to outlaw the ban. Because of the involvement of cruelty with animals and public safety concerns, the Animal Welfare Board of India earlier filed a case in the Supreme Court of India for a ban on Jallikattu. Many believe that commercialization and the entry of big sponsors come along with publicizing the big prize money. These led the tradition to transform into abusing animals, inflicting pain, and torture. In 2019, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), India, revealed that bulls were whipped and jabbed with wooden sticks. Besides, PETA India has released an investigative report in the same year, mentioning incidents supported with visuals references on bull abuse, and documented extreme animal cruelty. According to the report, about 42 humans, 14 bulls, and one cow have died during the so-called cultural events — Jallikattu. Despite the notification released by the Ministry of Environment and Forests in 2011 to ban the use of bulls as performing animals, the practice continued. But in May 2014, the Supreme Court of India scrapped down the State law and finally banned Jallikattu. In 2017, several people had protested against the ban on the event. Due to the protests in January 2017, the governor of Tamil Nadu issued a new ordinance to continue Jallikattu events, but the legal ground of Jallikattu, yet not resolved. However, the Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi, attends the 2021 Jallikattu event, demonstrating his support. Therefore, Isn't the leaders of political parties must be psychologically evaluated before they hold any position?

Perhaps no animal would choose a torturous death with only the option to die or perform until the last breath. While maintaining cultural practices, people tend to forget that animals sense pain as humans do. Abusing and Cruelty to Animals must not be a part of any culture, regardless of the community or religion. No Sports deserves to be called 'sports' that may cost the lives of animals.
